Where's Waldo?

In Morelia, we were starting to celebrate the air I breathes, birthday, her 29th, as usual, and we were somewhere in a well designed roof top over-looking the city. We requested of Sergio the bartender/manager, a dynamite Martini (Vodka Gibson really) very tall, straight up and dirty, bone cold, chilled glass’s, mine with 4 onions and hers, two onions and two olives, with just a small splash of Vermouth.

Sergio sort of flinched and in the gravest of tones said, perdóname senior no tenemos cebollas ni Vermouth. Luckily, we had just been at a store half a block away, so I mentioned they sold Marinated cocktail onions and Vermouth there. Before I could get all the words out of my mouth, he said, no tengas cuidado, horita lo agarramos. He said they normally carry everything but they had just run out. Of course, I extended my appreciation and mentioned that if he was going to the store, please pick me up a small jar of the same onions and Vermouth, as well. Con mucho gusto senior para servirle was his reply. I really liked this guy, very accommodating. Plus if you request a Martini with onions, I’ve learned you’re lucky if you can get one in Mexico but I assumed since this was a very nice place with ambiance, a cocktail lounge on a roof top with plush comfort seating for eagles nest viewing of the city, this place would certainly be the exception. Sergio put some American grove background music on for us and well into our second Martini, a nice mellow piece played and begged us to dance together over-looking the city. Yes, it was a great way to start the evenings birthday celebrations. Sergio was well taken care of…

The marinated onions were one of the best I’ve tasted and although the Vermouth was not as dry as accustomed, it worked well. If you’ve been to Morelia and know the town fairly well, based on the “where’s Waldo scheme” can you guess the location of this photo?? ;-)

Your absolutely right! But like most things some people do attach themselves to habit and yes, in some posts I clarify the type of Martini it is according to Hoyle, as a Gibson. As mentioned before Robert, Martinis are not that popular in Mexico and a Gibson especially with "marinated cocktail onions" can be a very tall order. included is a photo of the onions Sanborns gave us in a nice decorative plate, when our Gibson's ordered arrived.... Check it out..

Incidently Tashby, your guess was spot on. I knew SP knew the answer, she knows just about anything Mexican, especially Morelia. Thanks for keeping a bit of a mystery SP. I'll send some more birds eyeI views from the hotel in other posts.

I see what you mean !!!!!!!!!! Now I think that would have been a GIBSON and not just a regular ole' Gibson!!! I used to like a Gibson many years ago . . . .glad I never had the pleasure of that one!

Todd,

In my mid 30’s to late 40’ I was a scotch and water on the rocks drinker. That is about as close to a whiskey based Manhattan I’ve come. Every once in awhile I get a hankering for the old spirits and I keep a very nice bottle of Mac Callan single malt for special occasion like Christmas and more.

In my 50’s Martinis than Gibson’s became a favorite forward. Who knows maybe on another day, if your still living in which is now one of my favorites-Patzcuaro, we’ll have a drink and get to know each other better.

Hasta Luego

Oscar
