Where Are You

I just signed onto this site and have been reading many of the posts. I am considering retiring to Mexico within the next four to five years and have been gathering information about places I would like to look at. I printed up some maps of Mexico from the Internet and I cannot fine Guanajuato or San Miguel de Allende on any of the maps. Where exactly are these two cities/town located?

I can assure you both places exist. Guanajuato is both a state and a city, sort of like New York, N.Y.

Geographically, I describe SMA as the Kansas of Mexico. It is half way down the country, and about equal distance from either coast. Since San Miguel is in the State of Guanajuato, I guess the same description would work for either destination.

I'd suggest you get a real road map of Mexico, and that will locate things better for you. Guia Roja is one which I believe is available thru Amazon, and has lots of detail. You might also invest in any travel guide such as the Rough Guide to Mexico, and that will help you understand a bit more about not only the location, but the geography as well.

Thank you for the info. D.G. I guess I will have to quit being so cheap and just go buy a good map, either that or pull out my atlas from my last college class. That ought to work too.

Since SMA is so small in population (about 70,000 within the city itself, maybe 100,000 including the nearby small towns and countryside) it isn't big enough to be on many maps which list cities based on population. If this helps, we're about 160 miles NW of Mexico City.
