One of the newer restaurants in town, Los Amigos, has been having a trio singing Irish tunes every Friday night 8-10 pm. (They tend to stick around and do soft rock until midnight afterward.) One of the owners is from Dublin. The singers got rained out tonight at 9:45 (and it isn't even rainy season), but we had a great time until then. The food is good too, particularly the homemade pastries. The Thai chicken curry on rice is excellent, especially when followed by carrot cake and real whipped cream. And Thursday night I finally went to Club 27, another new venue, for another fantastic evening. What excellent dancers we have in SMA! A half dozen of the older gringo men could have been Arthur Murray instructors--one tall guy with a gray ponytail outshone all his partners and everyone else on the floor. He had the '50s moves down as well as the big band style and more current dance steps, too. Two preteen girls who obviously have taken dance lessons had a hoot dancing with each other and with various parents and other elders throughout the evening, when they weren't dashing up and down the aisles showing their age. Several couples performed the tango with all the prerequisite ankle twists and dips, very cool. Music alternated between a half-dozen Latin beat tunes, then rock from the 50's and '60s, followed by Sinatra and big band, more salsa, rock from the '70s and '80s, tango, etc. Something for everyone. For those who complain about the high costs of drinks in SMA, entry was 50 pesos which included two drinks and peanuts as well as the dance floor. It's a fun little dance floor with life-sized photos of John Travolta, Elvis, et al. to inspire your steps. Norma and I thought we were pretty good but we were surrounded by really hot dancers, as entertaining to watch as to dance ourselves. If you've wondered about going, be encouraged, be very encouraged. It's every Thursday night, on Hidalgo between Mesones and Insurgentes, closer to Insurgentes. Carol Schmidt
