In Phoenix we used to put 40,000 miles a year on our car; in San Miguel, other than when we have to drive to the US, we put on 1,200 miles a year. You'll find you can walk to your classes and to the Biblioteca and just about everyplace else just fine, taking a taxi when you have groceries to carry home. We do drive to Tuesday Market and Gigante once a week because we buy so much Diet Pepsi and produce that we find it hard to get it all into a taxi and to go between the Tuesday Market and then Gigante with all the purchases in both places. And we drive to Costco once a month to load up on meats and specialty stuff. That's it. Otherwise we walk. There are some very small cars here that are not available in the US which might fit your needs. They're tiny things, look like half the size of a standard US model. A stripped Ford Fiesta, not so little, four door, is around $8,500 US, and some two-door models are even less. I even see golf carts and ATVs on the streets! But I'm so thrilled I can walk just about anyplace, and hop in a taxi for $1.35 US most of the other times, or on the city buses which come so often I can't believe it. Norma would love to sell our car but I admit, I'd feel trapped somehow without one, just psychological. We don't even drive to the States anymore, we've decided, the first-class buses are cheaper and less stressful. Carol Schmidt
