I'd said earlier that no one I personallyl knew had experienced any crime greater than having an empty cardboard computer box stolen out of the back of their unlocked pickup camper shell. Sad to report, that same pickup has been stolen right from in front of our friend's apartment near Orizaba at 4 in the afternoon. It was locked, but the owner doesn't have an alarm system, if that would have done any good. We used to keep our passports and FM3s in our car for convenience but will remove them back to the house. Our friend did have Mexican insurance, Lewis and Lewis, and the adjuster came to her house the next day after she reported the theft. Since the pickup was a Ford, it probably is in a chop shop somewhere becoming parts. Ours is an unusual Japanese brand so maybe we're less likely to be a target since our car's parts would probably not be useful to anyone. (People say to always buy a Chevy or Ford in Mexico because you can get parts easily.) Before SMA, all of us lived near Phoenix, one of the greatest crime theft cities in the US because of its proximity to the Mexican border. I'm sure our risk of car theft was greater there, but it happened here. I still feel much safer overall here than I did in the States. Carol Schmidt
