Coming down from Toronto on Sunday to do some exploration. We were down in San Miguel and Guanajuato for a couple of weeks last year and enjoyed both areas very much. This time we wish to explore the Guadalajara/Lake Chapala and Morelia/Patzcuaro areas. Couple of questions..
1 We are looking for really wonderful old historic Inns or Hotels to stay in these areas and would like some ideas. We're mid-fifties and relatively adventurous! We enjoy old buildings and good food! Your suggestions please..
2 Also we're looking at maybe a long-term lease on an older apartment or house- 10 years or so... Is this is a better or worse idea than buying or renting in Morelia/Patzcuaro? Ideally I would really enjoy buying an older property and renovating it (I'm an Architect) but I'm not sure that I want that financial or time commitment ..any comments?

In Morelia, for over-the-top decor (and really decent food), try Fonda Las Mercedes.

In Pátzcuaro, try La Companía on the large plaza. The food is excellent and the decor is all Michoacán folk art.
