Tuesday Tianguis

Would people please share with me their experiences with and opinions of the Tuesday tianguis?

I have been able to get occasional bargains there, but most of the produce prices don't seem all that different from the prices at my small local market, and certainly not worth the hassle of a trip on a crowded bus to a crowded market where there seldom seem to be many pleasant surprises.

Even the few bargains are offset by what I suspect (but can't prove) are "thumbs on the scales" and shortchanging. (I've heard of one newcomer who got change for a 100 peso note in the old, worthless, currency.) Last week for me there was a very blatent example for me of "special" pricing for gringos. I asked a kid selling poblanos the cost of a stack. It was 5 pesos, about the same as what I paid a couple of days previous to a woman selling them on the street. I gave the kid a 20. He took it to an older fellow and brought me back 10 pesos. I asked him where the other 5 pesos was. The older guy held up 10 fingers, indicating that was the price of the peppers. I handed them back and took back the money. In his haste to screw a gringo, the guy lost a sale.

I am tempted to forget about going up there at all now. Or maybe I'm just doing my marketing all wrong.

Any suggestions?

Martin

Martin,

you should try their fresh pesacdo, red snapper and shrimps. You have to be there early to get good picks. That fish tastes really good to me. But, Martin, I suggest, you take mexicanos with you. Let them do some of your purchasing, invite theem to a gordita and hang with them so that you might lose a little of your obvious gringo contour. I like going to that tianguis (sp) and find very good 20 pesos t-shirts colorful shirts, long-sleeved cotton t's. For that price I can dress myself pretty "good." I also enjoy the pirated movies on Dvd's and the 10 pesos Cd's. My music and film collection has prospered. When I will get back, I'll drag you there again and we'll take Jesus or Hilda and let them help us not getting robbed.

Sorry, Lisa, your spell-check post that was sent by mistake was just too confusing and irrelevant to this forum, and then your apology for sending it didn't seem necessary either. Nothing important or even controversial got deleted, folks, just an error got corrected.

Since this was my first deletion as the new moderator of this forum, I thought I'd explain. I expect I'll be pretty loose in letting posts stay rather than deleting them, and I'll try to give an explanation when I do delete.
