To solve a problem, one must first admit the problem exists. I know a little bit
more about Guanajuato and Baja California than other Mexican states.
Nevertheless, I was stunned to read the following article. Facts such as those
outlined in the study give anyone, including lovers of the Bajio, cause to pause
and reflect about the conventional wisdom that it is among the safer areas in
the country. Kidnapping and extortion constitute a huge problem. Denying it's
existence won't make it go away. In fact, it can only get worse.

Seems to be a problem with your provided link. It takes you to a list with rain reports and H1N1 reports.

Thank you Brian. From what I think I understood from the article, it appears to be fairly safe having a profession as a kidnapper or extortionist!

I live in the state of Veracruz. There is no reporting on the amount of kidnappings and extortion that takes place in this state. As the article said, Veracruz was one of the states whose state attorney's general office refused to give any information about this ongoing problem. Their thinking is that if you ignore it, it will go away. Not true! According to some Mexican business people who I know, some of them work in agriculture, others in insurance sales, there is a huge problem with extortion and also kidnapping in the rural farming districts of the state. They say that these crimes never are reported and that the farm owners just pay and pay more, pickup trucks, cash, land, animals, equipment, and sometimes with their lives if they refuse to go along.

Psst - don`t tell anyone. Gringos in Veracruz are not affected, because they don't know any better, or at least publicize it..

PSST! Everybody is affected, including Gringos. It places limits on where one can live and or do business. Also raises the general costs of operation which follows with higher living costs for all, foreign residents as well as nacionals.
