Sanmiguelada

Can't Post |
Realizing that Sanmiguelada isn't until the third (?) weekend in September, I sense that it's not too early to start making plans. Or is it too late?

Where's the best vantage point? What arrangements need be made to secure that vantage point? Are there recommended hotels along the route of the bulls?

We went once and that was enough. We paid $45 US for El Pegaso restaurant, right on the route because it had access to bathrooms, important to us. Once you're inside the area before 11 am you don't leave until around 2:30 or 3 when the bulls have been returned to their trucks. The bulls are released around 12:30 and walk around for an hour looking confused, all the young men and a few women trying to taunt them. Very few actual charges.

But there are usually one or two very serious injuries each year anyway--a woman Red Cross volunteer got gored in her femoral artery last year and almost died. Rentals are filling up rapidly I am sure. The whole area has metal gates around the bull run/walk area to protect bystanders, but some fools always go into the paths.

The city doesn't sell booze before the run but people have it anyway. El Pegaso's $45 included a paella dinner and all the sangria you wanted. We got the best table in the joint, up against the main window to the outside, but as soon as the bulls came a dozen young boys jumped up on the window grates and totally blocked our view, so we had to go outside, behind the metal gates, to see. I'm 5'8", could see fine, shorter people could not. A few got up on wooden chairs to see. I got photos pretty close up of the bulls.

That night the whole town was full of drunken tourists--we tried to drive someplace, a big mistake, a stupid kid jumped onto our car and wouldn't get off. We got back home ASAP and stayed in. We may be out of town that weekend. Most of the tourists seem to be from Mexico City. I'm glad I did it but once is enough.
