The Non Toll Option. (okay, lets just say the minimal toll option) Head south to Celaya. I take the Limbramento to the free road to Salamanca, heading out a bit till I catch the toll towards Salvatierra. I think its only 19 pesos, but anytime I try to drive through Celaya, I usually get lost and pull my hair out so now I head for the toll! Exit the toll road and head south on 51 to Salvatierra. At Salvatierra you have 2 options West or South West If you head west , you will pass a couple of small villages San Pedro, has a variety of road side stall with plants, pots serapes, cowboy boots, hats and a variety of food stalls, all over a space of only 1/2 of a kilometre. After that you continue west, the next point of interest is Yuriria, you can turn left and bypass it or if you head into town you will find a charming little village. The Parroquia is particularly striking. http://en.wikipedia.org/.../Image:Parroquia.JPG Next you will hit the road heading south towards Moroleon. As you approach there will be MANY markets and stalls selling clothing. Seems a great deal of clothing is manufactured there. I have never checked them out, but if you do, let us know what you think. Now you can either pick up the toll road east of Moroleon on continue south on the free road. If you take the toll road, it will dump you out just north of Morelia. If you take the free road you will go through Cuitzeo. I haven't checked it out myself but I have heard it is quite charming. Or South (from Salvatierra) If you decide to go south from Salvatierra, you need to head to Acambaro, a farming town that I really couldnt tell you anything about. From there to continue to Zinapecuaro, a town famous for its polychromic pottery, prehispanic replicas and ceramic pumkins and gourds. I have a picture of some of the pottery on the posting I did on my blog of the day of the dead market here in Patzcuaro. You can see it here. http://lifeinthecorazon.blogspot.com/...-of-dead-market.html Ironically I have stopped 2 times there to check out the shops, but with no luck. The first time I hit there at seista, and the second time, I was running late and only seem to find the same old stuff you get everywhere before I had to leave. Nice time I will schedule things better! From there you will head towards Morelia on the 120. I cant remember exactly but about 10-15 kilometres west of Zinapecuaro we came across a little lunch place that was really hoping. It was called Almuezro Dona Chilo, nothing fancy, but great homemade food. Then on to Morelia, then on to Patzcuaro as before. Have a great trip!
