Isn't it great to live in a city where so much is going on? We've dropped by the Jardin several times today, to find several parades, the Voladores, the blowing up of dolls on spinning stands, the papier mache giant puppets, and tons of tourists. What's most impressive is that all these festivities are the local people celebrating the San Miguel feast day, not at all concerned about the tourists, who are irrelevant, not the focus of the fiestas. This is such a party town--I've read that the Church asked SMA leaders to cut back the number of patron saints they had, with all the accompanying fiesta days! Nothing ever got done, people were too busy partying! I don't know if that's true or not, but this city sure knows how to celebrate St. Michael the Archangel's feast day! Have to admit, I did not go out at 4 am for the biggest fireworks display of the year. I did that last year and got a burn on my forehead when I was too stupid to watch where I was going and ended up in the direct path of the fireworks. I wondered why there were no people in that area! I slept through them after the first 4 am blast woke me up. At 5 am I woke up again briefly for the grand finale, which I sleepily thought was a thunderstorm. I'm going to a rooftop party tomorrow night at which we'll probably see the last fireworks of the weekend. And then we might get a few weeks' reprieve until Day of the Dead festivities. Or maybe a spare parade will show up sometime in the meantime. What a town! Carol Schmidt
