This is in response to the original "safety in hotels" thread on the travel forum.
El Sol del Bajio is carrying a story today about two armed robberies in San Miguel one of which occurred last Monday night so it apparently is not the same one as referred to by the OP. Correo doesn't have it but does include a piece in which the chief of police specifies the areas in town which are considered gang hotspots. I think he is being a bit harsh by blaming working mothers for the gang problem and probably could have phrased it differently.
