Once again (already) I am in the market to rent a place in SMA. I have found by experience that the ads in Atencion are NOT the way to go. Prices advertised are generally 50% to 200% higher than the best deals in town. And how do you find the best deals in town? By word of mouth. So I'm asking the Mexico Connect mouth if it has any good words for me regarding places available. I'm looking for a lease of at least 6 months, preferable a year. The landlord or lady has to accept animals, and it has to be in a safe neighborhood. There will be a minimum of one bedroom.

I have seen one place that is going for 2300 pesos. It has two (tiny) bedrooms and is rather dark, but if nothing better comes up, I'll take it next week. A larger place in San Antonio is going for 3,000 pesos and has three large bedrooms and a large patio (but the current tenant is not certain whether she is leaving to go to another place in Guadalupe.

If anyone knows of anything available, please contact me.

Stop by Callejon del Codo 12 (not Codo) this is a short block between Umaran and Arboles/Ladrilleras. They don't advertise vacancies and are very selective about tenants being quiet etc. Alejandra is an excellent landlady and, as with most places, gives a discount for longer term. Security is excellent and there are regular mounted police patrols throughout the night.

I know of a very small studio for $1400 pesos, unfurnished, a half block from Ancho San Antonio, across the street and the other direction from St. Paul's. The current occupant is moving to a bigger place, she went nuts because it was so small, basically one living room-bedroom and a small kitchen and bath. She has cats and a dog so pets are okay.

The rest of the tenants around the courtyard are Mexicans and the landlady would like another gringo tenant since our friend fixed the place up so nicely (repainted and added a big cabinet). There are a couple of pet rabbits in the courtyard--if your dog would kill the rabbits you wouldn't be welcome.

My friend is just moving to a larger apartment within the same complex so she likes it. If you're interested in the specific address write back.

Geezer: I just returned from San Miguel and had the same problem but finally settled it with the help of a realtor. I did see one apartment at Hospicio #25, a really large 2 b/r second floor over an old abuela and pets were permitted; as a matter of fact, there was a strong smell of dog throughout which wouldn't have been too good for my cat. She wanted $500US and I didn't try to negotiate. It was still available 2 days ago. Check the bulletin board at Border Crossing and walk the streets looking for Renta signs in the windows. Mike
