Renewal of FM-3 in SMA

Living 60 miles from the only INAMI office in the state(in SMA), it is inconvenient to drive there for the sole purpose of getting questions answered. This being the reason for this post, I was wondering if anyone with experience renewing an FM-3 in SMA would know how long, prior to the expiration date, it is advisable to go to the INAMI office for renewal? (this is my first renewal) The expiration date is Jan. 23, 2004, so 30 days prior is impossible due to the holidays. Also, what are the total costs for renewal? And finally, would anyone know of an english speaking person who handles the task of FM-3 renewals for foreigners living in the state of Guanajuato? (name and phone number) Thankyou.

The earliest date on which you could apply for your renewal is 30 days before the expiration date. But that doesn't mean that you have to march down to the INAMI office 2 days before Christmas. You can just as easily go to the INAMI office for your renewal on any working day before your expiration date of 24 January 2004. Or even afterward, with the 30- (or 60-day, I keep forgetting which) window.

You haven't mentioned which variety of the FM-3 you have. That limits the response.

For a no-inmigrante FM-3 without permission to work, you will need these documents:

a. Your current passport and a copy of it
b. Your FM-3 and a copy of all pages
c. A comprabante de domicilio, original and one copy
d. Your past three months' bank statements, originals and one copy.
e. Three SHCP forms, available at any papeleria.
f. $1,104 pesos for the renewal of your FM-3
g. Letter of solicitude, in Spanish, requesting the renewal, original and one copy

Last time we had ours renewed we found that we now have to have our proof of income (i.e. Social Security and pension) submitted to the U.S. consulate and verified and approved by them, with a letter signed by the Consul, and that was an extra 300 pesos or so. It took a week for them to do this, too.

The U.S. Consulate in San Miguel de Allende is right across from Belles Artes on Hernandez Macias, and the guy's name is Col. Phil Maher. I think we had to get the paperwork into their office one week and the pickup was only one other day a week. Their phone is 415-152-2357, and e-mail is coromar@unisono.net.mx for current info on dates.

Go as close to the one-month-ahead time for the renewal as possible to allow for delays and snags, if any. I was out of Mexico when mine expired on a health emergency and had to pay a 2000-peso fine, even with proof of the medical emergency. It would have been more if I didn't have that documentation. The fees Jennifer gives are correct for the basic gov. fee for the renewal.

We use Patty Garcia, cel 044 415 1493122, to handle all of it for us, and she charges only around 300 pesos more to do all the work for you, including the running to and from the Consulate. She's on Solano 12 in SMA. I recommend her highly. Maybe you could do some of the stuff with her by mail? She's fluent in English, too.

If you tell the consul's assistant you are living out of San Miguel (Irapuato in my case) she will prepare the proof of income letter while you wait--she's very nice. If you arrive early in the morning, you should have time to get the letter and go to inmigracion the same day.
