Last time we had ours renewed we found that we now have to have our proof of income (i.e. Social Security and pension) submitted to the U.S. consulate and verified and approved by them, with a letter signed by the Consul, and that was an extra 300 pesos or so. It took a week for them to do this, too. The U.S. Consulate in San Miguel de Allende is right across from Belles Artes on Hernandez Macias, and the guy's name is Col. Phil Maher. I think we had to get the paperwork into their office one week and the pickup was only one other day a week. Their phone is 415-152-2357, and e-mail is coromar@unisono.net.mx for current info on dates. Go as close to the one-month-ahead time for the renewal as possible to allow for delays and snags, if any. I was out of Mexico when mine expired on a health emergency and had to pay a 2000-peso fine, even with proof of the medical emergency. It would have been more if I didn't have that documentation. The fees Jennifer gives are correct for the basic gov. fee for the renewal. We use Patty Garcia, cel 044 415 1493122, to handle all of it for us, and she charges only around 300 pesos more to do all the work for you, including the running to and from the Consulate. She's on Solano 12 in SMA. I recommend her highly. Maybe you could do some of the stuff with her by mail? She's fluent in English, too. Carol Schmidt
