Meson Sacristia de la Compania, http://www.mexicoboutiquehotels.com/mesonsacristia/ is my all-time favorite. Pricey, but ah-so-worth-it. At the very least, have lunch there. You'll want to lick the plate, because the food is so good. Another option is the Camino Real in Puebla, which often offers packages and is a little easier to deal with if you want to easier access to your car. Since you're planning to be in the vicinity, Tlaxcala bears exploring. There are some rather nice hotels downtown, but the real sleeper is the Centro Vacacional Trinidad, just on the outskirts. http://www.imss.gob.mx/.../Vacaciones/trinidad The place has remarkable grounds and is open to even those not enrolled in IMSS. It's so inexpensive that you'll be able to afford a few nights later at the Meson Sacristia de la Compania without breaking the bank. The restaurant at Trinidad is sort of geared to convention fare, fully as exciting as a meal at Sanborn's, but adequate.
