Patzcuaro and Morelia from SMA

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi,

A friend and I would like to visit the above on a 2 night trip from SMA. We realize that is a short amount of time - and wonder how much is feasible? She has 2 dogs and does not want to leave them for longer than that. How far a drive is it from SMA? Any recommendations on what we should not miss? Thanks so much!

San Miguel de Allende is 150 miles from Morelia, but you should allow yourself four hours by car, because it’s mostly two-lane blacktop.

Morelia is 36 miles from Patzcuaro, a 45-minute trip.

You could spend one night in Morelia and one in Patzcuaro, or you might decide to devote the entire two days to a single venue. There’s more than enough to see, and that’s only hitting the high spots, in 48 hours in either town.

Why not look at the Michoacan Resource Index on this site? http://www.mexconnect.com/.../michoacanindex.html

No trip to Morelia is complete without visiting the Catedral, the Museo del Dulces (as opposed to the Candy Market), Casa de Artesanias, a walk past the Tarascan Fountain down the Calzada to Guadalupe Church, a jaunt up to the bandera….

And Patzcuaro, well there’s the Basilica, the two plazas, Once Patios, the mercado, the Biblioteca, El Jorongo, the dock, Janitzio, the Museum of Popular Arts…..

And don’t Tupataro, half-way between Morelia and Patzcuaro.

Thanks Jennifer - I think it may be best to devote the 2 nights to one place. What are your thoughts on that? If we could only do one or the other which would you pick? I know that we are interested in shopping, I am especially interested in the various potteries of that area. I have done some research and printed out some info from the forums/index. So far, the hotels in Patzcuaro look fairly expensive (at least the ones I can search on the internet). There seems to be no shortage of reasonable hotels in Morelia. Any ideas on lodging in Patzcuaro?

Thanks again!

Morelia is a colonial city, and Patzcuaro's a village. The difference is night and day, and comparing the two would be like comparing apples and oranges.

If you'll go to http://www.michoacan-travel.com, you'll find a directory of hotels for each location.

My favorite hotel in Patzcuaro is the Hotel Mansion Iturbe, followed by La Casa Encantada. In Morelia, my favorites are the Villa Montana and the Virrey de Mendoza. The Hotel Casino is a good budget property.
