Patzcauro evenings

Can't Post |
Thanks for all the information I've gleaned over the years from your forums. Now one last question before boarding the plane Friday. We'll be arriving at Morelia and then going to Patzcauro for a week. After which, we will be bussing to Ixtapa, for a week. Then we will bus to Acapulco for a few days before flying home to El Paso, TX.
Because of the bussing we are attempting to keep luggage to a minimum. Yet we know it will be chilly in the evenings in Patzcauro.
The question is how chilly? Would a medium weight sweater or jacket suffice? Or is something warmer in order? We will probably not be walking much at night but don't want to freeze either.
Thanks very much in advance for any help.

Not directly answering your question, but if you’re arriving at Morelia’s airport, it’s just as easy to take a cab to Patzcuaro directly from the airport. About $500 M.N., mas or menos. If you’re arriving at Morelia’s bus station, and if there will be more than one person, it’s just as easy and economical to take a cab from the bus station to Patzcuaro.

I haven’t been in Patzcuaro at night since the end of the year, but I had on two sweaters, a wool coat, a silk scarf and a wool rebozo, and I felt comfortable. <g> You will probably need something warmer than a light-weight sweater. If you’ve got a lightweight PolarFleece, even a vest, that should work. I was going to suggest a silk scarf, but seeing as you’re male, that might not be appropriate. Got a silk turtleneck? At the very least, plan on layering your clothing. The temps should be around 50-55 F. at 9 p.m.

Wow! Sounds like you might be a little cold blooded. I (we) will definately take your advice and bring something warmer than originally planned. We thought maybe a layover to see (minimally, to be sure) some of Morelia before bussing (taxing) to Patzcuaro the following day, would be a good plan. Any comments?

Thanks much for your prompt reply. (we're still packing)

She's not joking... It's been freezing cold around here the last two months....

You may or may not realize this, but you probably won't have heating inside the places you visit. So you'll want warm clothing even while in your hotel room, etc.....

The good news is, I think winter is just about over. The last few days have been beautiful, clear skys, 24-25 during the afternoons...

You might want to spend more than a single day in Morelia. It's a wonderful wandering-around town which, like Patzcuaro, reveals itself little by little. When you arrive in Morelia, stop at the Municipal Tourism office on Guillermo Prieto, just a few steps away from Madero, to pick up the new tourist brochures. And then swing over to the State Tourism Office in front of the Palacio Clavijero to get your mitts on the brand-new (and most excellent, I might add) regional tourism booklets. The ones for Patzcuaro are simply out of this world.

You'll find Morelia's climate somewhat warmer than Patzcuaro, but I'd still characterize the weather as "fall weather."

Patzcuaro has an altitude of 7000' -- that combined with its location adjacent to the lake spell chilling temps as soon as the sun drops.

While I don't know how much time you want to devote to being on the road, I would suggest that you make a daytrip to Uruapan while you're in Patzcuaro. The climate over there is the high tropics, and it's simply a spectacular journey of about 45 minutes.

Even though Uruapan is warmer, I can recall a time in March when the only heat in my room came from the hair dryer, and that was definitely welcome.

And don't forget on my other favorite towns near Patzcuaro -- Santa Clara de Cobre.

(Perhaps I should start lying about Patzcuaro's weather so the best sweater shop in town -- El Jorongo http://www.eljorongo.com could make every more sales. OTOH, they seem to be doing a land-office business at all times of the year, so that should signal to you something about the chill.)

One more thing about the climate between Morelia and Patzcuaro -- if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes. It'll change. That much you can always count upon.
