I am looking for any advice or suggestions about travelling to Paracho for the Guitar Festival in August, 2002. In particular:
Is it feasible to stay in Morelia and travel to Paracho each day?
Any recommendations on where to stay in Paracho?
Any recommendations on places to visit in the area?
Thank you.

The guitar festival in Paracho is August 5th thru the 10th.. There is only one hotel in Paracho, that I know of. I would suggest you look for a hotel in Uruapan which is about 40 minutes away.. There are buses going from Uruapan to Paracho about every hour during the daytime. You can also take a taxi from Paracho to Uruapan at a reasonable rate. The taxi is good because you can come and go anytime of the day or night.

There are two hotels in Paracho:
MESON ORIENTAL C. Económica
10 habitaciones
Plaza Morelos No. 5, Paracho, Michoacan tel. (4) 525-0114
TITA 1*
16 habitaciones
Prol. 20 de Noviembre No. 175, Paracho, Michoacan tel. (4) 525-0253
A commute from Morelia to Paracho would spell just under two hours each way, and I'd join Richard in his recommendation that you stay in Uruapan. My recommendation there is the Mansion Cuptatzio, which sits at the edge of the Parque Eduardo Ruiz.
There's definitely no shortage of activity in and around Uruapan -- from a visit to the park (allow a minimum of two hours to walk its trails), Fabricas San Pedro, the Huatepera, just hanging around the town plaza, the Mercado de Antojitos, Hacienda Caracha and its swimming pools, Angahuan and Paricutin -- so those accompanying you will have plenty to do. And for those who want to venture somewhat farther afield, the churches of Nurio and Zacan merit a trip for their coffered ceilings. A major restoration project has renewed the grace and style of the church and huatepera at Nurio.

There are two hotels in Paracho, the Hotel Hermalinda (3 stories, very retangular rooms, no ambiance, about $20 US per night) and Mansion Oriental (one story. loaded with Meican texture, rooms with bath are aobut $15 per night, rooms to share bath - very clean conditions - are about $10 per night). It is really ridiculous to stay in Urapan at the Cupatizio if the guitar fesitval is what you are interested in because the bus trip is a hassle back and forth. You must absolutely book in advance at either hotel for the time of the festival.
