New highway to Zihuatanejo

I understand a new highway connecting Morelia to Ixtapa and Zihua is open. Is it completed? What is the estimated time from Morelia to the beach? From Patzcuaro to the beach? Is it a toll road? I once took a bus from Uruapan to Zihua and my memory is that it's a pretty hellacious ride. Is it the same route? And, is it still a wild ride? Thanks,

Yes, the new autopista is unofficially open and they are only charging cuotas on the officially opened sections in Michoacán. It's about 4½ hours to Zihuatanejo from Pátzcuaro, and when the construction is finished it should be onlyabout a 2½ hour drive. There is currently a 45-minute detour around Infiernillo on the old road to Lázaro, but as long as you take your time and watch the road it's not so bad. The rest of the autopista is terrific! The last bridge is being put in and the tentative official opening was supposed to be next month. I don't know if that is still the plan, but it can't be too far from completion.

I think the detour is enough is to make you sick, driving anything over 50 km/h.
