Moving to San Miguel

Hello fellow northern Californians who are now expats in San Miguel!

I will be retiring this year and plan to make a full time move to San Miguel. I currently live in the foothills of the Sierras in California and am planning to take some large household items. Any of you move your households to SMA using a moving company? And, if so, who did you use?

Also, what border crossing did you use? Anyone use Del Rio? If so, is it a cuota road the entire way to SMA?

Saludos,
Cass

I am not a fellow Californian but I do live in the Central Highlands about 60-miles from San Miguel Allende...I just crossed the frontera at Eagle Pass.
It could not have gone any better.

I researched the posts over the years and changed my mind from Del Rio to Eagle Pass because of what Esperanza had posted about her experience.
Gracias, Esperanza....you hit the old proverbial nail on the head.......I don't like to go through Laredo so I vacillated between Del Rio and Eagle Pass ...then saw Esperanza's post and it made my mind up for me.

I crossed with a fully loaded Toyota Camry and had my FM3 stamped at the bridge. I then went to the checkpoint and got my car papers in about 15-minutes and then had a two minute visit with the Aduana and he waived me through. I had two 40" LCD Hd TV's in the trunk and many electronic personal items and he could not have been any nicer.

The drive from Piedras Negras was not bad at all....the only two lane is to Montclova....you must go through the town and then hit four lanes all the way to the turn off at San Miguel Allende on 57.....you never get off 57 and the cuotas were wonderful and not as expensive as I remembered. I by-passed Saltillo...Matehuala...San Luis Potosi....Queretaro and landed at mi casa in Tequisquiapan after about 17-hours....but would have made it sooner if it had not been for bad fog in South Texas and around Montcova. I drove 1080 miles from my house in North Texas to Tequisquiapan.

Once you get out of Montclova turn that blinker on left turn...hit the accelerator and you won't have any problems.....the Federal Traffic Policia were out there but I only saw five or six between Matehuala and San Luis Potosi......other than that just a couple here and there.

Hope this helps in your decision making process and thanks to all who have posted previously about their experiences.

Bob,

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond and offering such detailed information about the crossing from Eagle Pass. I will definitely take this route. I've heard wonderful things about your town and certainly have it on my list of places to visit once moved to SMA.

Mil gracias, Bob
