It's not Mexican, but Bizancio is a very good Italian restaurant in a gorgeous colonial house downtown. It's located on Corregidora between Galeana and Rayon, just 2 blocks south of Av. Madero.
For Mariachi music you may want to try la Cantina de los Remedios on Camelinas across from Plaza Fiesta Camelinas shopping center.
For more traditional music be sure to go to the Colibri on Galeana just south of Madero on Friday or Saturday nights. Be sure to take your camera, as you can see the Danza de los Viejitos performed there. There is a cover charge and reservations are a very good idea. Call 312-2261. You need to arrive within a few minutes of your stated reservation time or they sometimes give away your table.
Another spot for folk music is the Leon de Mecenas on Abasolo in the block between Corregidora and Aldama. They recently changed ownership so I don't know their reservation policy.
Yet another spot is Bohemia V (cinco) at Allende 355 just off Galeana in the same block as the Museo Michoacano.
Enjoy your visit.
