I plan to visit Morelia, Pazcuaro and Uruapan then go to Playa Azul for a couple of days.
Is it better to fly to Guadalahara or Mexico City?
I don't mind taking the buses at either place. I live in Chicago.
Thanks a lot.

I'm planning the same trip and wondering if there are good direct busses from either Guad. or Mex. to either Uruapan or Patzcuaro. I'm going on to San Miguel and that way I don't have to do any backtracking. Also what is the best route from Morelia to SMA? Gracias
----------------------

Mexicana flies daily (well, nightly to be correct) from ORD and MDW to MLM. It’s the logical flight to take from Chicago if you’re headed to any point in Michoacan. Why would you want to fly into GDL or MEX when MLM’s available?
Herradura de la Plata http://www.hdp.com.mx/ and ETN have routes between Mexico City and Morelia, and the former between Morelia and Patzcuaro. Parikuni http://www.parhikuni.com.mx/ (the site never seems to come up) has routes from Morelia to Patzcuaro and points beyond, including Uruapan and Lazaro Cardenas. There is some kind of bus between the points you mentioned, departing almost hourly, so you ought not have any problem.

The best route between SMA and Morelia is by car! It’s 150 miles. Allow about 4 hours, because it’s mostly 2-lane blacktop. And you’ve actually got a choice of routes, all of which are interesting. Here are two options:
1. SMA to Comonfort to Celaya. Celaya to Salvatierra, then swing over to Acambaro. Jog down to the Mexico-Guadalajara cuota, hang a right on the cuota toward Guadalajara, and then get off at the Morelia interchange.
2. SMA to Comonfort to Celaya. Celaya to Salvaiterra, then over to Yuriria, down to Moroleon, Cuitzeo, cross over Lake Cuitzeo, and then down to Morelia.

Besides the tips already given, I'd like to suggest to visit www.depatadeperro.com, this site can give you more information about what you can find on michoacán, maebe you would like to visit some other near by towns, with intresting attracctions. Near Uruapan I recomendo go to visit the Paricutin volcano. Near Pátzcuaro go to quiroga, where you can find lots of hadcrafts at a very good price. Near Morelia you could visit Capula, with neat pottery. anyway I'm sure you can find more on this site
