Minorities Living in SMA

Can't Post |
Hi I'm brand new to this forum!....My family and I are going to be visiting SMA this September. I was wondering about the ethnic diversity of the town and how they are treated?...Specifically, are there any African-American, Asian, or East Indian families living there? are they accepted? Any information that you may have on this subject is greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Sabrina

Being European-American, I can't really say except that I do see a sprinkling of African-Americans and Asians in SMA, not so many East Indians. African-Americans and Japanese-Mexicans I have talked to at length have said that the city is very open, with probably less discrimination than in the average U.S. city, since SMA would actually be more comparable to a liberal artsy community like Laguna Beach or Sedona or Santa Fe. We have an International Jazz Festival each October and the number of African-Americans goes way up that week, you can imagine! Participants I've talked to love coming to SMA for the festival and sing love songs to the town during their performances, so I think you'll have a great time. There are probably a half-dozen restaurants in town which serve Asian dishes, including two specifically Chinese, Lung Fu (also Thai) and China Palace. El Harem has Lebanese food, nothing probably East Indian, however.

There is certainly racism within Mexico, a color-consciousness even within families where darker-skinned people are subtly and not-so-subtly treated less well. It goes back to the rape of Mexico by white-skinned Spaniards who, well, read the history of Mexico if you haven't. I don't need to tell you about racism. Tourists I sense are treated pretty well no matter what. I hope you do come and have a fantastic vacation and experience not even the slightest sideways look! You can get a better sense of how it is when you get here.
