Living with children in San Miguel/Guanajuato

Can't Post |
Hello. My husband and I have just started looking into a move to San Miguel (or perhaps Guanajuato), but we have two small children, ages 1 and 4, who will need to go to school. Are there expatriate families in the cities who have school-aged children? If so, do they send them to the public schools, or are there private/bilingual schools? I've been able to find nothing on the Internet. Our children are young enough that there would be no problem sending them to Spanish-only schools, but we're concerned about the public school quality; and since we'll be trying to make ends meet on a very limited income (my husband and I both want to spend much of our time reading and writing), we won't be able to afford pricey American-type private schools. We'd consider homeschooling if there were enough others to put together a co-op, or to join in one already formed. Anyone know what other people do? Thanks!

There's lots of information on MexConnect on educating children in Mexico, pros and cons of each alternative. The younge gringos I've run into here have their kids in the Waldorf bilingual school, and there are several other good private schools, bilingual too. They worry that their kids don't get the full exposure to the English language that would prepare them for SATs, etc.--you know, the complexities of an essay question on something esoteric. I think you'd have to make sure they continue to get extra reading at home, etc. Do you have the names of the private schools here? Maybe you can contact the schools and see what they say. I'll get some names for you if you need them--write me privately.
