Language Schools in GTO: Smaller is Better!

Can't Post |
Being here in Guanajuato to personally compare, I'm happy to share that a very small, new school "Esquela Espanol Universal" is of superior quality, especially for the older learner (over age 40?) Alas, my reasons for coming to this conclusion were not smooth and happy. I considered EEU before coming from the states, but at first passed, choosing a somewhat cheaper, also relatively small school. Knowing absolutely NO Spanish, the homestay option with a Mexican family was not only a "must," but an eagerly anticipated one. The school with whom I made my arrangements from the states put me into a home with a family, who, in fairness, were nice enough, but the facility left something to be desired: a nice room but facing right out on a VERY noisy main street, one bathroom downstairs (serving a total of 9 people, I would come to find!) and paying for three meals, including a supper -that really wasn't. When I expressed displeasure, things got really messed up. Without even attending EEU, I went there and director Carolina Rodriguez magnanimously phoned off HER host family list, and I now have a completely private room with its own bath AND shower, and great food and service -for the same price as what I was paying before. I think the quality of the host family is an important reflection of the school, itself. The thing that impressed me about EEU is that both times I went to visit, I met people from the states -former students of Carolina's-who had come back to visit -even to help! Now at the school, I take only five hours of personal instruction instead of 20 - but that is tailored to my needs and relevant to what my limited memory can assimilate. For people in their 20's or 30's -the other, larger schools may offer a more social atmosphere, but for the older student with more exacting needs - Escuela Espanol Universal -works.
