La Puertecita or Sierra Nevada?

Which is the better choice? And why?

For the money, I would substitute a new hotel in town, Casa Rosada, for either of your choices. It is in a primo location, has just recently been opened and all is new. Unlike the Sierra Nevada, everything is located within the one location. Immediately next door is San Miguel's finest restaurant, although Casa Rosada also has dining facilities. And unlike the La Puertecita, it is only a short walk to the Jardin and all the important sites and shops of El Centro.

I'v never been inside the Sierra Nevada so won't comment about it, but I think La Puertecita restaurant is highly overrated. The Sunday afternoon Mexican buffet is pretty good, frequented by those who have gone to the 12-2 House and Gardens tour sponsored by the Biblioteca.

But the Thursday All You Can Eat Texas Barbeque 1:30-4 has tough overcooked burgers, tiny pieces of ribs and chicken that you have to keep coming back for and the all-you-can-eat aspect is certainly discouraged, and not that much of a selection of sides and desserts. I think both buffets are 145 pesos now. The fresh fish selections Fridays and Saturdays are very small portions for the prices, too, and nothing extraordinary.

I've recommended the hotel to some people who wanted to rent a large place while in SMA--La Puertecita has 1, 2, and 3-bedroom condos for sale or rent, with fitness center and all hotel services. You've seen its web page, http://www.lapuertecita.com for more info. The van service from the hotel is a good idea--it's a bit out of Centro where I live. Sierra Nevada is not quite as far out, and it's on the beautiful Parque Juarez (on the far side of town from the main park, the Jardin), but it's still a bit of a walk to most activities. What I love most about SMA is being able to walk easily to almost everything, and neither hotel fits that criterion.

Sierra Nevada is not only located at Parque Juarez, but throughout El Centro in many restored colonial homes.
