Mike,

There are a number of good ones here. My favorite is by Robert DeGast (who is also a photographer, locally known for the "Doors of San Miguel" series). Also, I would buy Archie Deans book once you arrive. I dont remember the website right now but you can buy the book at many locations (La Conexion and Border Crossings, both communications centers have them).

You will also find that a good Guia Roja of various areas of Mexico is useful if you are going to travel. I just used mine to get to Lake Chapala and back.

Cuidate,

Laurianne

LInks and places to buy The Insiders Guide and maps

Here is the website for The Insider's Guide to San Miguel:

http://insidersma.tripod.com/order.html

Archie Dean's e-mail address for the book is smabooks@yahoo.com. Total cost for the latest edition is $19 which includes shipping to a U.S. address, and it takes about two weeks, which may or may not give you enough time to get it before you get here. If not, pick it up as soon as you arrive and read it the first night--you can get it at the Biblioteca, La Conexion mailing service, Instituto Allende, Tecolote bookstore on Jesus #11, Lagundi art supplies store and magazine rack on Umaran#17 corner of H. Macias, and many other places.

I don't have the latest edition but Archie Dean's forward says it contains a two-page map of SMA. In many of those same places where the book is sold, you can also buy the map Laurianne refers to, "The Best Map of San Miguel de Allende." It is.
