I may be crazy...but do I have a chance of finding any peace and quiet in SMA?

The title pretty much sums it up. I had a great 2 bedroom rental I was looking at and was lucky enough to find a previous tenant to speak to about it. Her review of the noise level was scathing. She lives in a city so was used to noise. The road was a dead end, looked to be fairly quiet. Apparently every morning car horns start going off because people park all at the dead end and block each others cars in ;) Not a huge surprise, having spent time in Mexico, but I wouldn't have thought of it. Add to that the roosters, dogs, etc. (which I know I have no control over) and the carpenter that lived next door and it made for pretty miserable living conditions for them while they were there.

Is my only hope to leave the city center? Or are there central neighborhoods that might have a little more peace and quiet (especially at night).

Thanks for your assistance!

Mexigirl,

Bienvenidos a San Miguel de Allende...Centro has been described as the most festive neighborhood in the most festive city in the most festive country in the world. Try Guadiana or Los Frailes but they aren't nearly as much fun.

Sure, there are quieter neighborhoods in SMA, but they won't be right in the center of town. Usually people are attracted to the Jardin, shopping, restaurants, and so forth, but then discover that living with all of that commerce is really not very attractive. I would suggest you get on your hiking shoes and head any direction you want away from the center, and you will probably find the quiet you are seeking. Just bear in mind though, this is Mexico, and your neighbors were probably living there before you arrived, so be a good guest, and accept the condition that you chose.

There are quiet places in SMA. Try La Aldea, Los Frailes, Buena Vista, Atascadero, Guadiana, San Antonio. Mostly any place away from the centre. One year we stayed in a little town just outside of SMA, Correlejo. It was very quiet. There was a bus that went along the road into SMA every 1/2 hour and took you straight to the centre. Once you get to know SMA you'll know where you want to be.

If you really like peace and quiet, maybe a Mexican city is not the place for you. I don't think that it is just San Miguel. Mexico is just noisier than the USA or Canada. Think earplugs.

Thanks for the ideas on being outside Centro. I have lived in Mexico before and am aware of the difference in noise level. I also have a hearing disability that actually causes my hearing to be sensitive in one ear - so I am pretty well acquainted with earplugs too. My hope was to find people that know the area and could offer suggestions on what options there might be. I love Mexico and honestly one of my least favorite things about the country is the noise level. However, knowing I can't change that I am just trying to find middle ground.

Thanks again

Hi--Don't know if you're still looking at this thread, but for what it's worth, I spent a week in what I assume is the Centro at a B&B on Callejon del Pueblito (near the Mercado Artesania) about a 5 minute walk to the Jardin, in any case, and I found it surprisingly quieter than I expected it to be (of course I do wear ear plugs no matter where I sleep :0). The main thing that kept us awake was the heat.

Also, I bet just sitting in some of the churches (and I am certainly not religious) is a very nice way to find a peaceful spot. Plus--if you're willing to drive or take a bus to the outskirts of Guanajuato, we were taken (by a guide) to the most magnificant spot called "The Ex-Hacienda de San Gabriel de Barrera", which is a converted mining quarry turned into a series of beautiful interconnected and very green gardens--such an oasis really where they actually play piped in Gregorian chant (including Simon & Garfunkle, Gregorian style--really), but it was a place I could imagine going to often if I lived in the area. Takes about an hour by car from SMA.

Peacefully,

S.

He's right! You may want to reconsider Mexico. Some of the things that you don't want are some of the things that are 'great' about this country.

Thanks for the thoughts. There will be no reconsidering Mexico as I have lived there before and my boyfriend is there. Two very sound reasons for returning. I have Multiple Sclerosis and it has left one of my ears damaged (nerve damage). Therefore, I am more sensitive to noise than the average bear. It is a source of frustration for me but I have become very well acquainted with my ear plugs in the last few years. What I was hoping to get was info from those who know the different areas in SMA. I would guess that some areas tend to be quieter than others. My concern was still being somewhat central - at least able to walk, even if it is a long walk - and still being able to have some peace.

Mexico is definitely a country full of noise but also, for me, I find incredible peace there. I am not willing to let my disabilities get in the way of pursuing my dreams. I am only trying to find the best way to work with the problem.

Thanks for the advice
