How is everyone beating the heat...

and the dust? This is not my favorite time of year. Cerveza fria is OK, but that still won't stop the nose bleeds from the dry, dry air and dust.

Tepache! You can make it at home http://www.mexconnected.com/...tring=tepache;#21382, but easier yet is to buy it from the street vendors. Every busy intersection on the outskirts of Morelia has featured a tepache vendor, a plastic barrel set up on the sidewalk, with an assistant selling iced glasses of this refreshing amber beverage to waiting customers. Yes, I was somewhat concerned about the water quality, but I figured that the good bacillae in the brew would kill anything. And after drinking it every single day for the past week, I've not had any problems.

A fountain, if you're lucky enough to have one, really helps. And so too do lots of cold showers, a wet head, and tons of moisturizer.

Getting up earlier than usual to accomplish what has to be done, spending the afternoons inside under the fan (don't mention what next month's CFE bill will be, please), and staying up late all seem to help.

I've been watching Fargo and The Perfect Storm just for the images of snow and cold water.

Here in Mazatlan, the spring has been very mild, almost perfect. We are still not using AC but have put away the blankets and are using just a sheet at night for cover. The fans cool it down enough to make it comfortable. We are doing our daily walk starting at dawn and finishing by 6:45 AM. It's been a little cool in the early mornings making it great for walking on the Malecon. Since the CFE rates have gone up so much in the last year, I'm a happy camper to see the weather helping me out financially. We are savoring every minute of this mild spring as we know what is on the way. The biggest hope, however, is for the much needed rainfall. We are in a drought that is approaching disaster proportions. I will be doing the rain dance with the dance for big surf this year.

This doesn't work if the humidity is above forty percent:

You can find those misting hoses up in the USA pretty cheap and when the heat is up and the humidity is low they can suck as much as twenty degrees out of the air and humidity it at the same time. The drawback is that after several weeks high mineral content in the water can render them plugged.

School Of Hard Knocks: An electric humidifier can be horrible to your health unless the reservoir is cleaned weekly and sterilized with a liquid sanitizer. A bout of pneumonia in the seventies high in the mountains was the result of just replenishing the water.
