Hiring a Driver - Local Guide

Can't Post | Private Reply
My wife and I are planning our first trip to Mexico and specifically Morelia where we think might eventually move in a few years. Neither of us speak Spanish yet. We do plan to learn Spanish.

A few questions we would appreciate information about:

1) Morelia has an airport but airfares seem a little bit steeper to it than to for example, Guad. Is Guad too far away to consider flying into?

2) We were considering at first renting a car but on second thought we think it might be better to hire a driver/tourist guide. Are there local people who do this sort of thing at a reasonable cost? How do you think it would compare to car rental?

3) If you have specific recommendations and contact info for drivers we could contact who are bilingual, please share.

Thanks for any information anyone can share with us.

GDL is a 3-hour bus trip away. The bus station is rather close to the airport in Guadalajara. Morelia's bus station is a state of the art facility, and there are plenty of cabs into town.

My recommendation for a tour guide/driver is Luis Miguel Lopez, whose website is http://www.mmg.com.mx/. He speaks English, has e-mail, and is a class act all around.

Car rental prices will depend, of course, upon what kind of car you plan on renting. That said, car rentals are still quite costly in Mexico. It will probably be less costly for you to rent the car at GDL than in Morelia.

Personally, I can think of no better adventure than hitting the open road with a rented car, but the fact that you've written signals that you're hesitant. You might be more comfortable sitting back and enjoying the view with someone else at the wheel. The prices will come out to about the same.

Jennifer,

Thanks for this response. Very helpful to me and I am sure to other readers who may be considering these same questions.

I have bookmarked the recommended Tour service and will contact them when we are ready to make specific plans.

Thanks,

Bill Newell
