Help with my Fathers Birth Certificate

Can't Post | Private Reply
My Father was born in Lapalma Michoacan in 1905 and all I have is a copy of his baptismal certificate, which the consulate in Detroit told me they couldn't use, that I had to have a birth certificate. I was told that there was a fire where they kept these and the birth records for that year (and others)were destroyed. I must get some official document to present to the Mexican consulate in Detroit Michigan USA, so that I can get my mexican nationality papers(?) or whatever I need to proof dual nationality. I don't speak Spanish (unfortunately) and don't know how to go about doing this. Is there anyone that can help me?

In cases where document depositories were destroyed, there is a mechanism for providing substitute documents, but it's a matter of very closely following the law. And you'll need a lawyer to handle getting those affidavits and substitute documents.

Adriana Perez is a lawyer practicing in Ajijic, who writes a monthly column for MexicoConnect. She's bilinqual, and her website is http://www.mexconnected.com/...el/KLM/apfindex.html.
