We bought a house in San Miguel a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if you would call it a casita or not, but it is not a large house. It was new, and sold for approximately $95,000 U.S. It had two bedrooms and 1.5 baths. I think you may have to be more flexible in your thinking. Most of the real estate for sale is for single family dwellings. As far as apartments are concerned, there are not many, and they are mostly rooms rented to students. I'm not sure either what an apartment would get you, since most all the homes are connected with party walls and cheek and jowl to each other. That desire to be in Centro will cost you dearly too. This city has been "discovered" . Also, being an architect from another country (if that is the case) doesn't help you much in Mexico. You still don't know the contractors or supply chains or a thousand other details you will need in order to remodel. Also, don't forget that things move at a different pace than what you may be used to. And materials vary as well as their availability. You should come to the places you are interested in, and investigate first hand. This is not something you can do sitting in front of a computer far away. Mexico is a very hands-on place where you will have to talk to people face to face.
