I have recently returned to frigid Iowa after three weeks in the central highlands. While in Guanajato, I stayed for the fifth or sixth time in the quaint and hospitable Casa Bertha. For upscale travelers, the Casa is not for you! I travel solo on a budget, trying to limit my lodging costs to less than $25 a day. In Guanajuato, you can't do better than the Casa, which is but a two-minute walk from the Jardin de la Union, the city's principal of several plazas. Owners Jesus and Bertha live away from the property now, leaving the management to sons Juan and Jorge. The Casa has a range of 14 rooms, from interiors with shared baths to a couple of suites that have creature comforts such as TV, refrigerator, basic cookstove, and large private bath. All rooms are sparkling clean, pleasantly decorated, and quiet. The third floor is topped by a large terrace that offers a magnificant view of the city, as well as communal cooking facilities. The guests tend to be repeaters, primarily in the 30-60 age range, so it does not have the party atmosphere one may find in hostels. Casa's top rate currently is 180 pesos per person for the more elaborately appointed units, and 150 for the more basic rooms. I usually stay in #7 by myself (it could handle up to five) and am charged the 180 rate. Lonely Planet includes Casa Bertha in its listing of budget housing in Guanajuato, along with several other hospedajes which I've investigated and found to be far below Casa Bertha's level of quality and price.
