How coincidental, last November we too encountered a very short, little old man (there are allot of short people in Guanajuato) who approached us one evening while strolling somewhere outside but near the main towns Mercado. He was clad in worn out, very old cloths which smacked of beggars poverty of which I initially was going to give a wide berth but this little old guy who seemed to be at least 100 years old, persisted. His pitch was good. Especially for someone who already looked like he had both feet in the grave and the more he talked; the cracks in his face framed two sumps where forlorn eyes told much more than what he was saying. He had been born in Guanajuato in days of yore when burros were a way of life. We talked and talked and the more I listened between thumbing through pictorial flyers he eagerly kept presenting, my heart kept edging out toward this little ol’guy. Beneath his old and seemingly fossilized presence, I sensed a brave heart with ongoing moxie you couldn’t help but like. Before departing, we gave him our name and assured him we’d be at the tour booth directly in front of the El Presidente Hotel, in the heart of town where we were staying. Not only was this convenient but lo and behold, the little ol’viejito was there bright and early, smile in hand waiting for us so he could collect his commission from the tour company. Ah, Mexico, its so alive ………. The tour was good and especially pleasing for my wife because the tour guide directed his presentation both in Spanish and English, so my wife could get in on all the action, as well. At the end of the tour, the guide looked at me and with his eyes and smile beckoning attention to a propina for the English of which he received an extra 10 bucks in gratitude.
