5 a.m. at MLM, waiting for MX 143’s arrival from SFO. We’re greeted by a new sign declaring “Have a Good Trip.” Yep, in English. And the parking lot has a new ticket dispenser, with instructions only in English. But it isn’t yet operational.
As usual, I can’t help but run into someone I know. Really, I don’t go to the airport looking for friends, but it’s a sign that in many ways we’re a small town.
Rene Ocana, proprietor of Hacienda Mariposas http://www/haciendamariposas.com, is on his way to SFO. The new spa’s open and ready, with steaming waters, at Hacienda Mariposas, he mentions. And business is good. We’ll get together for lunch when he’s back.
“Do you live here?” asked a woman from Wisconsin, waiting for relatives from Guanajuato to pick her up. She asked us what’s special about Michoacán, inquiring about Los Azufres and wondering why it’s so darn cold at the airport at this time of year. “It’s paradise,” Rene and I chime in, touting Michoacán.
And soon saunters over Brian Overcast, director of the NOE (New Educational Opportunities) Center http://www10.brinkster.com/centronoe/main.htm in Morelia, who’s headed to Oregon to play a hundred holes of golf in a single day in fundraiser in Gresham http://www.brindarfoundation.com/golf_marathon.htm. His folks, Lou and Sharon Overcast http://www10.brinkster.com/centronoe/interns/overcast.htm, part-time Morelianos, are driving over from Montana to caddy for him.
“I’ve lived in the U.S. for 21 years, and now I’m a citizen,” casually mentions a fellow waiting to board his flight back to SFO. His friend adds that he’s spent his quarter-century in the U.S. and is glad to be back living in Morelia. “It’s paradise,” he nodded (without any prompting whatsoever), telling his departing friend good-bye until his return for Navidad.
Just as Rubén Martínez wrote, "people can't wait to get the hell out of Michoacán, and they can't wait to get the hell back." http://www.mexconnect.com/MEX/jrose/jjrcrossingover.html
