Festival Cervantino in Guanajuato

Being in GTO these days might best be compared with observing a play-ground in a public school at recess time. Take the constant movement and exuberent social intensity and re-image it, multiplying by some thousands, expand the ages to - ALL, then drop the mix into a setting hundreds of years old and tantelizingly exotic, and you approach what it's like here in GTO for the International Festival Cervantino. At the other night's opening at the Alondega, we had it all: not just the symphony, chorus, fokloric dances, speaches and fireworks you might expect, but all of the above -outdoors with the thermostat set at "perfect" and the oders of food stalls nearby doing their part as well to seduce ALL of the senses! Walking the amber infused twisted streets and maze of alleys after dark is like being on the set of a Fellini movie - there's a festiveness and joy of being in the "now." It feels utterly safe. People of all ages experiencing the exuberence of being alive and out and about, with great entertainment in a storybook setting. Let the naysayers warn about stuff like pick-pockets; this environment takes the inuslar sterility of American (USA) society and stands it on it's head!

Thanks for posting your delightful and vivid description of the Festival, Joe. I'm glad you are enjoying your stay there, and have found a good language school. Please give us more reports--Guanajuato is one of the many places in Mexico we are interested in learning more about as possible retirement detinations.
