What is a guesstimate of the ExPat populations in Michoacan, Ajijic and San Miguel?

Not sure if this will help you, but it pained me to see so many views of your question and no responses. :-)

Here is data from the 2010 census, provided by INEGI, the government's statistics people. Hopefully the URL I give you will come through in English. You may view any MX state by selecting it at the top. Then go down under the blue bar heading of "Población, Hogares y Viviendas" and further down to "Migración" for the figures.

I am not sure of the validity of the Census figures, and they may just be governmental guesstimates. For the cumulative figures (as a percentage) they use the term "non-native", and I don't know if that means just foreigners, or if it includes anyone (Mexican or foreigner) who wasn't born in that particular MX state. They probably don't know either.

For the state of Michoacan, they give a cumulative percentage of 8.97%, which would translate into 390,288 non-natives living in Michoacan. For Guanajuato state, the number is 9.02%, and 494,870 people. For Jalisco state, the numbers are 13.08% and 961,469 people. They don't give figures for the country as a whole, or for specific cities within a state.

Approximately 3,000 for San Miguel de Allende is quite different from the 10-15,000 I often see quoted. And the population of 160,000 is higher than I've often seen (120,000-130,000).

so..... for san miguel, are the figures for the expat population approximately 3,000 or 12,000? we've seen the latter quoted lately. and for the overall population - is that in the 160,000 range or in the 120,000-130,000 range?

Good question!
The figures from the census are for municipalities.
The San Miguel figures are totals for all 512 "localities" (as defined by INEGI) in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende.
Of those "localities", 1 has a total population of 69,811 [presumably the core area of the city of San Miguel de Allende].
The next largest localities (2 of them) have populations between 2500 and 4999
The next largest (16) have populations between 1000 and 2499,
The remaining 400+ localities have populations smaller than 1000.

I'm not an expert on which localities beyond that core zone are considered part of the city of San Miguel de Allende. The definition of which localities count is critical to coming up with figures for the city, but the total figure may well be significantly less than the 160,000 or so quoted for the entire municipality.

Would that they were like the arrondissements in Paris! Most of the municipio of San Miguel de Allende is farming country and very poor--not touring country by any stretch.

ah well.... the poverty is certainly regrettable and, one wishes, remediable.... although the air is likely clearer of cigarette smoke. regardless, we look forward to our reconnaissance tour in may-june, and appreciate all input from this forum.

Editgirl, try really, really hard to let go of making assumptions--not harmful assumptions, just incorrect ones--about what you're going to find here. Lots of people in Mexico smoke, there is substantial air pollution, etc. And it's nothing at all like France.

thanks for your input. yes, we've read of the pollution, and actual preconceived notions would be so silly, certainly contradicting if not negating the purpose of a reconnaissance tour..... the whimsical arrondissement remark was just that; they differ greatly among themselves so even a novice wouldn't expect their ambiance to extend across continents.... even as the noxious tobacco fumes do.

The tobacco smoke is not the only smoke that exists in Mexico, people cook on wood fires, the farmers burn the fields every spring, some of the grass along roads are being cleared with fire, If you travel a little bit around Mexico you will breath your fair share of smoke. Right now in the low lands they are clearing with fire and then it will be followed by burining the corn fiels and if you think you have experience smoke in Paris you may want to rethink your trip.

thanks for your input. right now, we're planning only a short trip to just SMA but no more at this time. we've found that many places fit the adage of nice to visit but not to live.... we'll see.

Expats always over estimate their numbers and their influence. Last year INM only issued about 210,000 visas.
