December Visit?

Hi,

We are now considering visiting SMA in December, either the week before christmas or the week between christmas and new years. We will not actually be there on the 24th or 31st but on the other days. I am wondering after the sun goes down are there things to do and see outside with a small child? Or is it too cold and/or too dark? I guess I am wondering if we should make the trip then or hold off until we can come in the spring or summer when it's light later and nicer outside.

Thanks,

Patricia

San Miguel's has about an hour more of sunlight in the afternoon than you would have at the same time in the Northeastern U.S. You didn't say where you were from, but the closer one gets to the equator the less the difference would be. Since the night is long at that time of year, the extra hour seems significant. And because the night follows the warming of the day, the temps are higher than they would be in the morning.

Yes, there is lots to see after dark in San Miguel, but that obviously varies with the season, and what you are anticipating seeing. You should look at some of the monthly calendars of events, and decide if those things would be of interest. They never close the Jardin, and there is almost always much to see there, with lots of toy vendors and families on weekends that children would find interesting.

You mean you'd deprive your child of the magic of Christmas in Mexico just for an extra hour of sunlight? <g> Really, I wouldn't sweat it, because both times of year have their merits.

With any luck you can find a Posada one of the evenings, in which young children portray the biblical story of Mary and Joseph looking for an inn which will take them in. Mary typically rides a burro, and at the last house visited, which takes them in, there is a big party with a pinata for the kids.

Weather seems to be messed up in much of the world today, and SMA just had one of the coldest winters anyone remembers. It tipped below freezing many nights during December and early January, and many plants froze. During the day it still usually was sunny, from 60 to 75 F. Many buildings don't have any heat--we usually don't need it--but check which hotel you are going to stay to make sure there is heat in the room beyond a fireplace, especially for a child. Bring warm clothes!

Lots of families from Mexico City come to beautiful San Miguel for holidays, and there will be plenty of children around. Just going to the usual tourist sights should be enlightening for a child. Be sure to allow time for sitting in the Jardin watching other families and children relaxing in the city's living room! Buy a balloon toy from the many vendors, feed the pigeons, maybe hire a strolling mariachi band, enjoy the various dogs meet and greet each other, blow bubbles, and visit the live animals in the nativity scene by the giant Christmas tree in front of the Parroquia by the Jardin. You'll all have fun, promise.

Thank you everyone for your advice! I am convinced we will have a great time in December and have gone ahead and reserved a room.

Thanks,

Patricia
