Day of the Locos is Sunday

If you're in town and haven't seen this huge parade in which absolutely anything goes, show up Sunday morning in Centro. You'll see the parade route--it will be jammed. Thousands of paraders in every kind of costume will march, tossing wrapped hard candies into the crowds lining the route. Duck! Pick out a good little boy or girl near you to give the candy to and you will be appreciated. The kids make out like bandits.

I was shocked the first time to see what seemed to me to be blatant racism--an Aunt Jemima-dressed band, jungle cannibals in another float, etc. I soon came to realize that Mexico has its own history of cannibalism among jungle dwellers, and people are certainly entitled to make fun of their own history. The musicians in Aunt Jemima garb I still don't understand, though I've been told the purpose of the parade is to push the envelope as far as possible, even if many people's understanding of the complexities of racism is not as far advanced as I would like (true in the U.S. as well, of course).

No House and Gardens Tour from the Biblioteca Sunday in honor of the fiesta.

Ilove it when the locos and the local native americans dance (separately) outside the churches during the Easter services.
