DSL in SMA?

Does any one know if SMA offers DSL cable modem access? If it is offered, does it take a long time to get it?

Thanks

Yes, TeleCable, the TV cable company, offers DSL. The service is called CyberM@tsa. I do not know how long it would take to install, assuming that you already have cable TV service. Contact them at 152 1942 or 152 3442. They are open Mon-Fri 8:30 to 2:00 and 4:30 to 5:30; Saturday from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. They have two offices. The main office and studio is at the Salida a Celaya #95 and there is a branch in the Plaza Real Del Conde, space BB-15; open Monday through Sunday from 10:30 AM tp 4:30 PM.

Thanks, Don.

I'm hoping to spend several months in SMA sometime this year and telecommute to my job in NYC.

Telmex, the phone company in most of Mexico provides DSL service. It is called Prodigy Infinitum and the cost is dependent upon the download speed required. One pays for the service as an attachment to the monthly phone bill. If you plan to travel at all during your stay in Mexico, I would suggest Prodigy rather than the cable service. With the former, you can logon to your internet account using dialup from hotels, private homes etc whenever you are away from home including visits to the USA. suerte...

However, if you plan to stay put in SMA during your visit, and have cable TV installed where you rent, it would make more sense to use their service instead of TelMex because you won't tie up your phone line, and second lines are hard to come by.

DSL, in any of the implementations that I'm aware of (with the possible exception of iDSL, which is really just repackaged ISDN service) won't interfere with voice service or voice calls. Voice calls occupy the lower end of the frequency spectrum, typically in the 0-4 KHz range; data transmission in either the CAP or DMT implementations starts at 25 KHz and runs upward to 1.5 MHz. This means that as long as the installation is performed properly (specifically either microfilters are used to isolate voice equipment or a splitter is installed at the service entry point) you can have both voice conversations and data transmissions occurring simultaneously.

Well, I guess that answers that one. Good to know that someone out there truly understands all these technological pitfalls. Not that I'm going to give Telmex a try considering their regular phone service, but it's nice to know it's being offered.

One other point of clarification is with regards to the use of the term "DSL". The acronym for Digital Subscriber Line, the term is used to describe any one of a number of modulation schemes used to pack large amounts of data onto a copper telephone line. Common consumer-oriented implementations include Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) where the upstream and downstream transfer rates are unequal, and Symmetric DSL (SDSL) where the two rates match.

The term "cable modem" on the other hand is used to describe high speed internet connectivity provided using a cable television provider's coaxial cable network. And when looking for any type of high-speed connection (considered to be anything over the transmission rates of a 56 Kb/sec "analog" modem) what you're looking for is exactly that, a high-speed internet connection. The buzzword seeking will sometimes substitute the term "broadband" but this actually means any communication setup in which a single medium (copper wire pair, coax cable, fiberoptic pair) is used to transmit more than one type of data simultaneously. This would include both DSL (voice and data) and Cable Modem service (television, music, and data) but leave out other high-speed data transmission methods.

How do you know all this stuff, ET?

I'm planning to stay put in SMA during the week when I have to work. I'd travel a bit on weekends, but not with my laptop.

Thanks for all the info!
