Crime in SMA

Sorry to report this but I thought those local to this area should know. SMA held an event that celebrated the Mexican culture and bullfighting 2 Saturdays ago. That night I was visiting a friend on a very quiet street in Guadiana and left my car parked outside. She has lived there (and parked there) for 3 years without a problem. I came out about 9:30 to find police standing by my car. The drivers side window had been shattered (completely, never seen more glass pieces in my life!). The police were a tiny bit helpful and one did try to sweep out my car (unfortunately his large rifle handle kept hitting the outside of my poor car each time he made a sweep until I finally begged him to stop!). The situation was that people leaving the Mexican Fiesta in Parque Juarez walked down some streets and just took out windows - at least 10 cars at that point. I'm sure this was a random act of stupidity but since it happened to me I was somewhat frustrated by it. It cost over $250 to replace the window, and of course it won't be reimbursed. My concern is that while I am happy to see SMA putting $$ into local celebrations it doesn't make sense to hold these events if they can't protect us from the aftershocks. I'm somewhat relieved that the police where there but really would have preferred it if the city had made sure they were controlling the Fiesta goers in the first place. I realize things like this can not always be stopped but wanted to let you know that I would take special care during these celebrations. I hope that since this was widespread and much damage was done that they will do all they can to protect us/our homes/vehicles in the future.

Cuidate,

I'm sorry that happened to you. Thanks for reporting it. Lots of long-time residents get out of Dodge the weekend of the running of the bulls because of the influx of drunken tourists, mostly young men from Mexico City. We stay inside that weekend now and watch it on TV because the one time we did try to drive that night we had a young drunk jump on the back of our car and hitch a ride on our bumper.

I've had vandalism to my car in several US cities though, and had my car rocked and dented with kicks in one wild mess in Detroit while I was inside, afraid for my life. I had my newly painted car spray-painted all over with gang insignia when I ran into a convenience store in LA. I had my windshield shot through with a bullet on the freeway in the States, while I was driving.

I still feel much safer overall here from every kind of crime than I did in the States, but crime definitely does happen here. Sorry it happened to you.

the expense of a "secured" lot I guess. I'm sorry it happened to you but I'm glad to know you weren't singled out and that a whole string of autos was hit. Regards, Mike
