Well, it hardly seems possible but exactly three weeks from today Gaye and I will be making our first trip to Mexico to evaluate potential retirement areas. We'll be arriving late the evening of May 11 in Guanajuato and will be staying at the Hotel Posada Santa Fe until the 15th. Not long enough, I know, but with Gaye's work schedule it is the best we can do right now. We'd like to meet some expats there and chat about your experiences and get your advice about the town. Over lunch/dinner/drinks/cafecitos whatever. If you're interested in meeting us just let me know either here or by PM, or e-mail me at r.schaplowsky@att.net. We are (and have been) assiduously cramming our Spanish lessons so we can at least get around.

We will be arriving in Morelia on one of the busses (not as yet determined which one) on the 15th and will be staying at the BW Hotel Casino there until the 2 a.m. flight on the 20th takes us off to Chicago. Of course, we will check out of the hotel on the 19th, but will have all that day and evening to get together with anyone interested before we have to get to the airport. Hope to get to meet some of you while we're there. Just let me know, as above.

Here's a thought re meeting expats in the various places you'll be traveling: Go on down to the village plaza (there's usually one near the largest church) and spot a likely gringo. (er, expat from NOB). If he/she has a dog with him/her, mention something nice about the dog. That usually does it. Then mention that you're visiting and would like some information. If neither the dog nor the gringo/gringa bites you, you'll be well on your way to the kind of conversation you seek. Expats tend to be friendlier to visitors from NOB than you'd expect. Even those with no dog.

No, seriously. Gringal's advice is great. We have our dog with us, and I'm already tired from all the talking. Of course, he's not just any dog. I mean, he's the most handsome, best behaved dog on the planet...
