Buying Furniture

Can't Post |
I'm thinking of driving up from the Zihuatanejo area to the Uruapan or Patzcuaro area in May and buying some wooden living room or dining room furniture. I'm thinking of shelves, bureaus, sideboards, etc. We like the dining room table and chairs that we have.

Can anyone suggest starting places for looking? We are not looking for high quality pieces that we can hand down to grandchildren. We are looking for pieces that will last for 10 years in the humid environment of beachfront Guerrero.

Hi Ernie:

I bought some furniture from Promupsa in Patzcuaro last year and am very happy with it. We live on the Southern California coast, not as humid as where you are, but the furniture is holding up well. It is not expensive, and well made. My contact is Jay Boger, who lives in Patzcuaro. You can e-mail him : mexicraft@jaymexport.com.

Styles differ between Uruapan and Patzcuaro, but while you're in the general vicinity, let me suggest Pichataro and Cuanajo. Both towns are known for inexpensive, well-designed furniture in rustic styles. Pichataro is on a spur just off the free road between Uruapan and Patzcuaro, and Cuanajo is just beyond Tupataro, which is halfway between Morelia and Patzcuaro. Go to Tony Burton's most excellent interactive map to locate both towns.
