I guess the new bus station is a way out of town now toward Patzcuaro I think (west) and the airpot is a ways north
you could walk out to the road and catch a bus for about 10 pesos to town - get off near Plaza del Carmen - walk west toward Jardin de las Rosas and look for a combi to the bus station
as you see it is easier to get a taxi to the new bus station - quite a few busses to Patz each day
when you get to Patzcuaro go up the stairs at the St Augustin Hotel - there is a phone service there and on the wall is a poster for a rather cheap taxi all the way to the airport

Oh, Rick! Every time I'm at the airport, I think of you. Schlepping all the way to the road to catch a bus. You're a tougher traveller than I am! While your approach certainly is a peso-saving one, I'm not sure I'd recommend it to everyone landing at MLM in the dark. Especially with luggage.
A year ago, a taxi from MLM to Patzcuaro was $450 M.N., and it's increased slightly since then.
Morelia's new bus station is out on the north side of town, near the stadium. Taxis from the airport operate on zone fares, which would mean that a cab from the airport to the bus station would be in the $200 M.N. range.
There are buses traveling from Morelia to Patzcuaro about every hour, so catching one ought not be a problem. But you'll still need a cab from Patzcuaro's bus station to your hotel.
Even if I were a penny-pinching traveler, I'd still opt for the cab to Patzcuaro. Sometimes by asking around, you can find another traveler willing to split the cost of cab fare.

About three months a ago I spent two months on the hoof in Mexico. I took the reverse trip from Patzcuaro to Morelia. I had gone from Jiquilpan to Patzcuaro, then Morelia. The bus was second class on Herradura de Plata (I believe)which cost about 18 dollars U.S. The trip was about 3-4 hours. Taking a cab is really expensive by Mexican standards, beside you don't get the flavor of riding with the people. A great cathedral in Morelia and beautiful colonial buildings 400 years old if you get the chance. I walked across the border at Mexicali and bused from there so I'm not familiar with the airport in Morelia but you should be able to take a cab or bus to the Central of buses and purchase a ticket to Patzcuaro. In Patzcuaro I would recommend a boat trip, more like a water taxi to Yunuen for a 20 dollar night in a cabana. The bus should go all the way to the lake at the turnabout. Have you been in the region before? If you are planning on going into other areas I'd be glad to let you know my experiences traveling around Michoacan. Buena suerte!
