Bus from Leon to San Miguel

Do any bus lines run between Leon and San Miguel? In planning a trip to San Miguel, we're trying to decide if we should fly into Mexico City or Leon. Since Leon is closer it seems like a better choice, but I can't find anything on the internet about buses between San Miguel and Leon (just expensive van services).

There are lots of buses running between Leon and SMA. The only problem is that the airport is outside of Leon, towards the city of Guanajuato. I would take a taxi into Leon to the main bus terminal and then catch a first-class bus to SMA. Most buses stop in the city of Guanajuato on the way to SMA. You might consider taking a taxi or van to Guanajuato to the main bus terminal and catching the bus from there to SMA.

Unless you are on a very tight budget, take a taxi to San Miguel directly from the airport. Someone must know the price--it used to be about $40US (I live in Leon now, so I don't need the service any more.) There's a taxi stand right in the airport--you pay in advance and no tip is expected (unless the driver helps with a lot of bags). The taxi will drop you at your door in San Miguel and you'll literally save HOURS of hassle. (The bus experience is worthwhile, but not on the day you arrive!) DEFINITELY do not go to Mexico City--way out of the way.

About 2 years ago the going rate for taxi fare from the airport in Leon to SMA was $50 US. It is much better than taking the bus.

Since you live/lived in Leon, maybe you can help me: I'm flying into Leon but I want to go to Zacatecas for a couple days. Would you recommend taking a bus there?? And where would you recommend staying in Leon that is safe and affordable??

I don't know your schedule, but Leon is not a tourist city, so staying here is not much of a treat. If you have the time, stay in Guanajuato (city) and catch the bus to Zacatecas there. Guanajuato is only about 1 hour from Leon, and it is a beautiful place to visit. The airport is almost halfway between Leon and Guanajuato anyway, so it doesn't make much difference. I'm not sure which bus line goes to Zacatecas--take either ETN or Primera Plus. Schedules can be found on the internet. In case youdidn't know--Zacatecas will be very COLD right now. Try to find a hotel with heaters (rare!). Have a great trip.
