Best route to Paricutin/Angahuan

We are a group of volcanologists/archaeologists who have received a small grant to do some work around Paricutin Volcano. We initially thought we would fly into Guadalajara, rent a car there, and drive down to Angahuan, which seems to be the best place to base. However, in comparing airfares (from Phoenix), it is several hundred dollars cheaper to fly into Mexico City. So the question is, how long is the drive from Mexico City as compared to Guadalajara? To Uruapan, it looks like Mexico City is around 250 mi (430 km) and Guadalajara around 190 mi (305 km), but now knowing road conditions etc., I don't know how this translates into actual time. Or would it be worthwhile to consider flying into Mexico City and then taking an internal flight (if cheaper) to Morelia (or Uruapan)?
Any advice (and other tips) would be appreciated.
thanks
Mark Elson

It all sort of depends upon where you’re coming from. Consider a direct flight to Morelia from LAX, SFO or ORD. Depending upon your schedule and your carrier, a flight on Aeromar (which code shares with MX and Aeromexico) from MEX may be a fairly good deal. Aeromar’s fares, ticketed separately, from MEX to MLM run about $380 USD roundtrip.
From Morelia, it’s easy to rent a car and drive to Uruapan, a divided highway the entire way. And from Uruapan, it’s about 20 minutes to Angahuan.
Mileages can be deceptive. First, GDL is out on the east side of Guadalajara, which makes it fairly accessible to the cuota. MEX is on the eastern side of Mexico City, which means a spell of cross-town traffic for at least an hour, and then finding your way over the cuota, where it’s clear sailing all the way. For someone who’s not familiar with the road, I’d suggest GDL for first-timers.
Now, from the cuota from Guadalajara, you’re faced with either turning south somewhere near Zamora and heading south on 2-lane curving blacktop – or driving into Morelia and catching the divided highway. Travel time? It’s a toss-up.
Yet another option is to fly to MEX, take a cab to the Observatorio bus station, take ETN to Morelia (4.25 hours) and then rent a car from here.
All things considered, I'd opt for flying into MLM.

Hi! I am from San Juan Nuevo, which is close to the Paricutin. I reside in Sacramento, CA.
I suggest Morelia be the best route, Uruapan is 2 hrs. from there and you could take the bus, or rent a car in Morelia.
Also I would like te reccommend that you visit San Juan Nuevo, which is 9 Km from Uruapan and there is a route to el Paricutin.
Also, the Communidad Indigena <http://www.comunidadindigena.com/>
of San Juan could help, because they have cabins close to el Paricutin, you could contact them through their web site.
Good Luck!
