Beaches of Michoacan

I'm very curious about the beaches in Michoacan, north of Lazaro Cardenas? I have seen a few (not many) pictures of Playa Azul but basically haven't been able to find much information on the areas between Playa Azul and Cuyutlan. Is there a reason? Is is relatively safe? It seems like someplace to escape to? Any information would be appreciated. Nancy

My husband and I just returned from a two week trip making our way from Morelia to Uruapan to Playa Azul to Cuyutlan to Melaque. Playa Azul was the highlight for us. Very tranquil small town, few tourists, and great waves. We stayed in an unfinished hotel called Hotel Andrea run by a warm and welcoming woman named Lupe and we spent our days at Enramada Pelicano, one of the many palapa restaurants that line the beach. The routine is to buy something at one of the restaurants and then the table (and accompanying hammock) is yours for the day. We spent the time getting to know Senora Nena, the restaurant owner, her kids and grandkids, laying in hammocks, boogeyboarding, swimming, reading and in the cool of the morning, wandering streets and checking out the birds at the lagoon just south of town (er, that's east of town). I can't wait to go back.

We were on the bus so we only saw the rest of the coast from the windows and it looks fabulous. Next time we're taking a car and camping gear. The Michoacan coast has somehow eluded major development and there are some spectacular coves, open beaches and lagoons.

Thanks so much for the info. That does sound perfect and kind of what I thought the area might be like. We are going down by car the first of April and want to explore.

Nancy,

The weather will be fabulous in April, but as you probably already know, it's approaching Easter, which is a very very busy time for the coast. If you're going to stay in hotels anywhere near Easter week, be sure to make reservations. And be prepared for higher prices. If you get to Playa Azul give my regards to Senora Nena at Enramada Pelicanos I (and try her tostadas de camarones).
