My husband and I just returned from a two week trip making our way from Morelia to Uruapan to Playa Azul to Cuyutlan to Melaque. Playa Azul was the highlight for us. Very tranquil small town, few tourists, and great waves. We stayed in an unfinished hotel called Hotel Andrea run by a warm and welcoming woman named Lupe and we spent our days at Enramada Pelicano, one of the many palapa restaurants that line the beach. The routine is to buy something at one of the restaurants and then the table (and accompanying hammock) is yours for the day. We spent the time getting to know Senora Nena, the restaurant owner, her kids and grandkids, laying in hammocks, boogeyboarding, swimming, reading and in the cool of the morning, wandering streets and checking out the birds at the lagoon just south of town (er, that's east of town). I can't wait to go back. We were on the bus so we only saw the rest of the coast from the windows and it looks fabulous. Next time we're taking a car and camping gear. The Michoacan coast has somehow eluded major development and there are some spectacular coves, open beaches and lagoons.
