Hello -
My husband and I intend to return to Morelia this winter for a couple of weeks' vacation. This year, we would also like to spend a few days at a beach, and were hoping that forum participants might have some suggestions for us.
Are we right in thinking that Ixtapa-Zihuatenejo are the most accessible beaches from Morelia? Are there good bus connections betweent the two locations? Do folks have recommendations for a smaller hotel or a B&B at the beach?
Many thanks for any help anyone might be able to offer.
Marianne (Ottawa, Canada)

Marianne...i can help a little with the bus routes..I was in Morelia this summer and went to Ixtapa to Morelia and back by bus in late June...There was only one bus line that went to Ixtapa and it was an overnight bus leaving at 10:30 p.m. and getting to Ixtapa-Zihuatenejo around 6:30 a.m. It cost, if I remember, around 350-400 pesos. Coming back to Morelia is about the same 11 p.m. leaving and 4-5 a.m. in Morelia. Can't remember the bus line...i'll ask my friends to see if they can remember..i think ETN, but don't quote me on that.
There probably is a better way to do it...we went at the last minute. hope it helps.

Hey there, Let me suggest you that the most convinient thing is to rent a car in Morelia & do the driving yourself.
The local rental agencies have better prices than the international ones such as avis or budget. Now if you really want to take the bus I'd take first class to Playa Azul which takes about 5 hrs and buses leave every few hrs, then a connection bus to Ixtapa.
I used to live in Morelia so I hope you have a great time.
Also I would recommend to visit Merida. The mexican caribbean has the best & bluest beaches in Mexico.
Saludos amigos

I heardon the local radio here in Zihuatanejo that there is now a regular bus route on the new autopista. They didn't mention the name of the busline except to say it wasn't Estrella de Oro or Estrella Blanca. Via the autopista the ride should be around 4 hours from Morelia once the autopista is completed. In May there was still a detour around Lake Infiernillo, but that part should be completed soon if it isn't already. You can probably find out which busline it is at the Central de Autobuses in Morelia. We had quite a few of them here this past weekend, that's for sure!
Regarding where to stay on the beach inthe zihuatanejo area, I invite you to take a look at my website. There are two major parts: the directories of Internet listings, including lodgings, and the Visitors' Guide which includes some lodgings that don't have websites. I've provided contact information for the lodgings without websites.
Be sure to check out lodgings not only in Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa, but also the nearby areas of Troncones, Playa Larga and La Barra de Potosí.
