Beach Destination from SMA?

Hi,

I have friends that are considering coming to visit me in SMA this winter. They would like to rent a car (or take a bus) and spend a few days at a beach resort. I've been researching but haven't been able to come up with what would be the closest to SMA. I realize they are all a number of hours away.

Any ideas from those that live/have lived there?

Puerta Vallarta is about 10 hours by bus--you can do this overnight, if that helps. Manzanillo is about the same, but not worth the trip, IMHO.

Thanks GPK! Are there any beach areas on the east coast that are worth going to - Veracruz area or something like that?
