A day at Tuesday Market

Just got home from the huge open air Tuesday Market and bought a week's veggies and fruits featuring a kilo of giant blackberries, a kilo of apricots, a cantaloupe, a papaya bigger than 1 1/2 cantaloupes, a kilo of vine-ripened tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, zucchini, onions, dried ancho chiles, oranges, red peppers, fresh ginger root, garlic, eggplant, cucumber, mushrooms, carrots, and more I can't think of, for under $14 US.

Plus we had a ball doing it--the clothing stalls were full of bright red women's underwear because it is a tradition for women to wear red underwear New Year's Eve for good luck the coming year.

One guy walking up and down the aisles had three small canary cages for sale, the canaries inside singing their little hearts out, making everyone in the whole place smile.

And when we got home, there was the surviving Banty rooster in the courtyard garden, glistening bright orange in the sun, rolling in the dirt, taking a dust bath, digging a hole big enough almost to hide in, though the 12 feral cats who have gotten fat and sassy under our care, leave him alone.

The street dogs which killed his mate and nine babies two weeks ago haven't been back so we were looking for a Banty hen for him at the markets, but none were on sale today. Live turkeys, rabbits, pigeons, full-sized chickens, hamsters, puppies, goldfish, Siamese fighting fish, and tiny pet turtles of the kind that can no longer be sold in the States because of salmonella transmission, were available though. I love this place, I love it!

Candeleria Day is Feb. 2, when Juarez Park becomes one giant nursery as the town goes into Spring planting frenzy and we refurbish our herb garden, frozen out last week, and get new geraniums because ours got leggy during the winter. It did hit 30 and we froze along with the flowers on the poinsettia trees. My sister went back to Dallas after Christmas where her coworkers are sure to ask her why no tan. All of Mexico is a beach, you know.

Take Ancho San Antonio (which becomes The Road to Celaya) to the glorieta. Go around the glorieta to the exit which leads you in front of the Feliz Pollo restaurant (it's the third exit from the glorieta).

Take that road up the hill to the glorieta at the Gigante (big G sign). Turn right, don't get on the glorieta. Go to the first retorno and make the left so you're coming back toward Gigante. You'll see a big yellow arch where the buses and taxis stop. At the first place after that where you can turn right, go right and continue to the parking lot, which will also be on your right. Just follow the red and blue tarps over the stalls from there! Keep track of your directions when you're wandering around in the stalls so you can get back to your car.

Suggestion: Take a taxi the first time! Say Tienguis Martes and the driver will know. It's 20 pesos since it's out of the city limits. The city buses which go that direction will also say Gigante on them, and you can walk to the Tienguis from Gigante. Many people take a bus there (3 pesos) and then take a taxi home with their purchases.

The market is also referred to as "La Placita".

I believe it is really a tianguis--more "free-form" than a "mercado".
